However, before the beginning of the 20th century, it was just a small, peaceful village nestled in the Portuguese countryside.
In 1917, a special event occurred here. According to Catholic tradition, the Virgin Mary appeared to three shepherd children: Lucia, Jacinta, and Francisco. These apparitions took place over several months and are believed to carry important messages about prayer, conversion, and peace.
News of this event quickly spread throughout Portugal and then the entire Catholic world. From a little-known village, Fatima gradually became a pilgrimage site for millions of believers.
Today, Fatima welcomes millions of pilgrims from all continents each year, and it has become one of the greatest holy sites of Catholicism.

Fatima Square – the gathering place of hundreds of thousands of pilgrims.
At the heart of the Fatima sanctuary is Fatima Square – a vast space capable of holding hundreds of thousands of people.
In the middle of the square is the Chapel of the Apparitions (Capelinha das Aparições). This is believed to be the place where the Virgin Mary appeared to the three shepherd children.
Despite its vast size and constant crowds, the atmosphere here is often remarkably tranquil. In that tranquil space, people prayed the Rosary and sang hymns.
For many pilgrims, this is the most moving moment of the entire journey. The sacred atmosphere, the gentle candlelight, and the shared prayers of thousands create an unforgettable experience.
