What Is a Visa?

A visa (also known as an entry visa) is an important certificate issued by the government of a country to foreigners wishing to enter. It is typically stamped into your passport.

Depending on the country and the purpose of your visit, visa validity and type may differ. For Vietnamese citizens wishing to enter foreign countries, you must contact the representative office (Embassy or Consulate General) of that country nearest to you. You must first have a passport issued by the Vietnamese government before applying.

Common visa types include:

  1. Tourist Visa — Valid for 30 days from the date of entry. Typically issued for tourists with single entry through international border checkpoints. May be extended with valid reason.
  2. Business Visa — Valid for 90 to 180 days from entry. Issued for those conducting business or seeking investment opportunities, with multiple entry rights. May be extended with valid reason.
  3. Temporary Residence Permit — Valid for one year from entry. Issued for those working regularly or investing, with full entry rights through international checkpoints. Renewable with valid reason.

ETIAS Coming Late 2026 — What US Travelers Need to Know
Starting late 2026, the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) will be required for all US citizens entering the Schengen Area. ETIAS is not a visa — it is an online pre-travel authorization costing approximately €7, valid for 3 years with multiple entries. Most applications are approved automatically within minutes. Until ETIAS officially launches, US passport holders continue to enter visa-free for stays up to 90 days within any 180-day period. We recommend applying for ETIAS as soon as it becomes available before your pilgrimage departure.

Schengen Visa for Non-US Passport Holders (Green Card Holders)
If you hold a non-US passport and reside in the United States on a Green Card, H-1B, F-1, or other qualifying visa, you are likely required to obtain a Schengen visa before traveling to Europe. France switched its US visa processing from VFS Global to TLScontact in April 2025 — appointments fill quickly and there is no waitlist. We strongly recommend beginning your Schengen visa application at least 8–12 weeks before departure. Your US residence permit must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned return date. 90-Day Rule Reminder for Schengen Travel
US passport holders may stay in the Schengen Area for a maximum of 90 days within any rolling 180-day period. This rule is cumulative across all 27 Schengen countries — time spent in France, Italy, Spain, and Portugal all count together toward your 90-day limit. Overstaying can result in entry bans on future trips. For our pilgrimage groups with multi-country itineraries, this is typically not an issue, but travelers planning to extend their trip independently should plan carefully.

New 6-Month Passport Validity Requirement — Effective March 1, 2026
Vietnam now strictly enforces a 6-month passport validity requirement for all foreign travelers. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date in Vietnam — without exception. This applies to all visa categories including e-visa, visa on arrival, and visa-exempt nationalities. Travelers whose passports expire within 6 months of arrival will be denied boarding by airlines and turned away at immigration. If your passport is expiring soon, renew it before booking your Vietnam tour.

Vietnam E-Visa 2026 — US Citizens Must Apply in Advance
As of 2026, all US passport holders are required to obtain a valid visa before entering Vietnam — there is no general visa exemption for American travelers. The recommended option is the Vietnam e-visa, which can be applied for entirely online through the official Vietnam Immigration Department portal. The e-visa is valid for up to 90 days, available for single or multiple entry, and costs $25–$50 depending on entry type. Processing takes 3–7 business days. Your passport must have at least 2 blank visa pages and be valid for 6 months beyond your entry date. Overseas Vietnamese (Viet Kieu) — 5-Year Visa Exemption Available
Vietnamese-born individuals residing in the United States and their spouses and children are eligible to apply for a 5-year visa exemption certificate through the Vietnamese Embassy or consulate. This exemption allows multiple entries without requiring an e-visa for each trip. Contact the Vietnamese Consulate General in San Francisco or Houston for application details. If you hold both a US and a Vietnamese passport, note that you must use the same passport for entry and exit.

Brazil Reinstated Visa Requirement for US Citizens
Brazil reinstated its visa requirement for US citizens effective January 10, 2024, after years of visa-free travel. US passport holders must now obtain a Brazilian visa before traveling. The most convenient option is the Brazil e-visa, applied for online through the Brazilian government portal. The e-visa is valid for 2 years with multiple entries and allows stays of up to 90 days per visit. Processing time is typically 3–5 business days. Japan eVisa Now Available for US Citizens
As of December 2025, US residents can apply directly for a Japan eVisa through the official Japan eVISA portal. This single-entry tourist visa allows stays of up to 90 days and is for tourism purposes only. It does not cover business meetings or family visits, which still require a traditional visa application through the Japanese consulate. US citizens also retain their existing visa-free entry privilege for short stays — the eVisa is an alternative option for those who prefer a confirmed authorization before travel. Allow 3–5 business days for eVisa processing.

Japan Entry Tips for Pilgrimage Groups
When entering Japan as part of a tour group, carry printed proof of your return flight, hotel accommodation details, and a credit card showing sufficient funds. US passport holders are not required to obtain a visa in advance for stays under 90 days. Note that the 90-day visa-free period cannot be extended within Japan for tourism — if you plan to stay longer, you must depart and re-enter. K-ETA Exemption Extended Through December 2026 for US Citizens
South Korea's Ministry of Justice has formally extended the K-ETA (Korea Electronic Travel Authorization) exemption for US citizens through December 31, 2026. This means American passport holders can currently enter South Korea visa-free for stays up to 90 days without needing to apply for a K-ETA in advance. This exemption is part of South Korea's Visit Korea Year initiative. After December 2026, K-ETA may be required again — we will update this page when new information is available. No visa application, no K-ETA fee, and no pre-registration is currently required for US passport holders visiting Korea for tourism.

Korea Entry Tips — What to Carry at Immigration
Even without a K-ETA requirement, Korean immigration officers may ask to see proof of onward travel, hotel bookings, and sufficient funds. Tour group members should carry a printed copy of their Carnival US Travel itinerary and hotel confirmations. Passport must be valid for the full duration of your stay. Vietnamese passport holders and other nationalities that are not visa-exempt must apply for a C-3 tourist visa before departure — contact us for assistance if this applies to any member of your group.
